3 Cost-Effective Design Tips

Remember during Grade School when you were taught the “Golden Rule” — to treat others the way you want to be treated? Well, as a small business owner, I treat my clients’ budgets as if they were my own. I understand the importance of making your dollars stretch especially in today’s economy.  To help you make the most of your investment, here are three cost-effective tips for designing for print and web.

Tip 1: Select Pantone colors that have CMYK matches

When selecting Pantone colors for your company brand, be sure to pick or request colors that can be achieved in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black are the same colors used in your average desktop printers.) Why? Selecting these particular colors will allow you to take advantage of digital printing technology, which is far less expensive than the traditional offset printing press. You’ll find that a full color print job on a digital press costs less than a two-color, or even a one-color print job on an offset printer.

Tip 2: Take advantage of email marketing

Emails are not only “Green,” but they save green! Email marketing software subscriptions start around $10 a month based on how many people you are emailing (check out iContact.com and ConstantContact.com). Web designers who are familiar with the rules of HTML emails can design an email template for you and apply it to your email marketing software account allowing you to reuse the template over and over again. If you normally have a lot of content that goes into your newsletter, post the articles to your website or save the full newsletter layout as a PDF for website visitors to download.

Tip 3: Use a Content Management System (CMS) for your website

Today’s employees, especially recent graduates, are very tech savvy. Take advantage and create opportunities for staff with the use of a CMS-based website! Systems like Joomla! are not only easy to maintain for anyone familiar with adding text and images to a Word document, but many are open-source (that means free). This could save you thousands on web development time and even more on web maintenance fees because the regular maintenance can be done in-house. You also have the option of customizing an existing design template or having a custom design developed for your CMS of choice.
